Judy (Lee) Broyles

Just received word that our daughter-in-law, Judy, Kit's wife, Megan's mother, passed away on the 3rd of december. She struggled with cancer for about 5 years. We are destroyed at the loss and for Kit and Megan's suffering. We and many of our friends and family are praying for Kit and Megan to find peace and comfort in the Lord. It is doubley sad since we have not been able to communicate with them for 2 or 3 years at Kit's request. Hopefully God will soften his heart so that we can touch them and comfort them in their sorrow.

12-1-10

Grandson Stone was over today and we played outside some this afternoon even though it was cold and windy. When they'er playing, 3 year olds don't notice the weather much. He ran and played and chased a little foam glider I got him at Hobby lobby. Then he saw a large drift of leaves out back and ran and dove into the leaves. Ellen came out with the camera and we got some shots of Stone in the leaves

I don't remember playing in the leaves as a child, but do remember being scared by a snake in the leaves one time. It was about this time of year and I was about six or eight years old. I was going to the barn at about dusk and walked down the lane to the barn. After going 50 or 100 feet I heard a rustle in the leaves to the right of the path. Thinking it was a rattle snake, I beat a hasty retreat back to the house. I learned later that many snakes, rattler and otherwise, will shake their tails when threatened. If enough dry leaves are present and you add a spooky young boy, I guess any snake can be a "rattler"

IT DON"T GET MUCH BETTER......

I'm sitting at my laptop, looking out the window to a great autumn view of leaves and trees. A squirrel is running back and forth gathering acorns that have fallen among the leaves. It rained last night and it's still overcast making for a quiet cozy 7AM day-before-Thanksgiving. Ellen is still abed (unusual for her) and I hear the muffled sound of the little girls who live upstairs as they stir around on their Fall Break. It don't get much better than this

Yesterday Stone and Ryan (and Cole) were here most of the day and the boys played and watched videos all day. They really enjoy being together and I hope that last for a hundred years. It Don't get much better...

Last night we watched David and Cole, Nic and Krista and friends play volleyball at the church building. They won both of their games soundly and Ellen and I got to play with Ryan some more. It Don't get.....

We are having the kids over for Thanksgiving breakfast Thursday before they take off to see the in-laws. We were all together last Saturday at David and Cole's for our family Thanksgiving. Had Enchiladas, Mexican cornbread, Taco salad and cheese cake and played Trivia Pursuit. It don't get much...

God has blessed us so much this year I can't even start to enumerate. I can just say, "It don't get much better than this."

Have a wonderful holiday season

all's quiet on the western front. at least at apt 607. Ellen, stone and ryan are down for the count after a hard morning playing out back and riding horses (stick type, 1 each) and PBJ for lunch. E just came in the room so above is amended. Stone brought a store-bought stick horse with him today. It has a brown and white plush head and if you pinch its ear it goes clippity clop and whinnies. He gave it to Ryan in exchange for a 3' long tree limb he found in the back yard. Now they are both ecstatic with their trusty steeds. E doesn't allow sticks inside (horses or guns either) so Stone traded the tree limb for a broom handle when they came inside. They're both sawing logs in the ol' bunkhouse (livingroom floor) for a while. It's almost 1:30 and moms will be be here around 3:30. We'll see if they wake before moms get here. Happy Trails Buckaroos.

10-30-10

Here's a little "children's" story that might be good for us bigger kids too. I came up with it after a conversation about how to increase our love for God:

Theodore learns about love
Some time ago, in a small village outside the great city lived a small child named Theodore. His name means “son of a father’s love”. From the time Theodore was born, it was obvious that Theodore loved his parents and his parents loved him.
Most children in the village were well behaved and obeyed their parents while there were a few children that seemed to go out of their way to go against their parents’ wishes. These children openly showed that they didn’t care if they disappointed or saddened their parents.
Some of the more obedient children were well behaved for a number of different reasons. Some, because they feared their parents. Oh, their parents were not mean or evil. It was just that these children seemed to obey their parents only in order to avoid the consequences. Such consequences as getting a spanking or losing privileges. Their motto was “what my parents don’t know won’t hurt me.” They would do all kinds of things their parents wouldn’t approve of and count on their parents not finding out what they had done. They seemed to have very little care about how their parents felt as long as they got their way.
Another group of the village’s obedient children were good only if they were rewarded for it. They would be well behaved as long as their parents paid them for their good behavior and “bribed” the children to “act right”. And mostly it was just an act.
Then there the children, like Theodore, who loved their parents so much that they would do everything possible to make them happy. These children would avoid anything that would make their parents sad or disappointed.
Theodore’s relationship with his parents was based on a deep love and respect for his parents which grew out of the knowledge that his parents loved him more than anything in the world. He avoided doing things he knew his parents wouldn’t approve of not because he might be punished or not get a gift but because he loved them so and didn’t want to make them sad or disappointed in him.
Often, when Theodore woke up in the morning, he would look at all the ways his parents showed their love for him and think to himself “I am such a lucky child to have such wonderful, loving parents. I appreciate them so much and want to do everything I can to show them my love for them.”
One morning he awoke and saw all the things his parents had done to make him safe and healthy. He looked at all the clothes and toys his parents had lovingly provided for him. Then he smelled the breakfast his parents were fixing for him to enjoy and help him grow strong.
He thought to himself “I am truly loved! Today I will make a list of the things my parents do to show their love for me and I will be very careful to show my love for them.
And so he did.
And so can you.

Thank you, God for everything …
The big things and the small,
For “every good gift comes from God,”
The Giver of them all.

And all too often we accept
Without any thanks or praise,
The gifts God sends as blessings
Each day in many ways.

And so at this Thanksgiving time,
We offer up a prayer,
To thank You, God, for giving us
A lot more than our share.

First, thank You for the little things
That often come our way,
The things we take for granted,
But don’t mention when we pray.

The unexpected courtesy,
The thoughtful, kindly deed,
A hand reached out to help us
In the time of sudden need.

Oh, make us more aware, dear God,
Of little daily graces
That come to us with “sweet surprise”
From never-dreamed-of places.

Then, thank You for the “miracles”
We are much too blind to see,
And give us new awareness
Of our many gifts from Thee.

And help us to remember
That the key to life and living,
Is to make each prayer a prayer of thanks
And every day Thanksgiving.

no excuses

Ellen & I were recently asked to talk to a young couples class at Park Plaza about "Growing Older Together and Renaining Active Serving God." Well, we've got the "growing older" part down. Don't know about the rest. In the area of service, I think one of the tools the Devil uses most successfully on me is in the area of not being able to do something as well as someone else. "If I can't give them a seven course dinner, I'll just let them starve."

Attached is a poem that has convicted me for a long time. Hope it helps you with your "cup of cold water".

God doesn't require us to be great, just available. God loves us anyway.

"He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver."

Malachi 3:3 says:

"He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver."

This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God.

One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible Study.

That week, the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn't mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining silver.
As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities.

The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot; then she thought again about the verse that says:"He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver."

She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined.

The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.

The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, "How do you know when the silver is fully refined?"

He smiled at her and answered,
"Oh, that's easy -- when I see my image in it."

If today you are feeling the heat of the fire, remember that God has His eye on you and will keep watching you until He sees His image in you.

New Facebook Application test.

Just checking to see if I got this application right. My computer says "it's 99 feels like 108 " Went swimming with David and Ryan while "girls" had wedding shower at their house. Ryan is getting more adventurous in the pool. He has a "Puddle Jumper" floating device that fits on his chest and arms. He goes splashing and kicking and blowing bubbles.

72nd birthday last Wednesday. Lasted longer than anyone of my progenators. Sister, Sherrill, still with us. She is 3 years older than I. Strange weather this year. 95 degrees one day and rain the next. High in 80's even on rainy days. Still making good use of apt. swimming pool. Spent the day at Cole's house yesterday. Cole & Ellen getting read for Nic & Krista's wedding shower this afternoon. David is going to Florida next week to work on trainers his company sold to military. Cole is going to spend a few days with him while Ryan stays with David's parents. I have a Dr.'s appt. Monday. Diabetes out of control. Probably have to start insulin shots. Don't like to poke myself. It's either that or body breakdown. Maybe they will find a cure or less intrusive control soon.

Worked in Food Bank Thursday. No one there when we got there a little after noon. Morning workers all out of town. We helped 23 families Thursday afternoon. Would have been over 40 families if someone had worked in the morning. Hope everyone in need got helped. There are many other agencies that have food pantries but I think we are one of the most available ones. (We are open more hours a week than most.)

Ellen and I will go to Carbondale church tomorrow evening to hear Doug preach. They rotate some of the men in the congregation to preach on Sunday evening.

Doug has almost completed a new transformer bustron. More involved than first one and will actually transform from bus to robot. Doug and family just got back from Chicago area where they took "Bustron I". The 'tron' gets lots of attention wherever they go. Corporate HQ seems really pleased with Doug's creations.

It rained during the night. Looking out the apartment front window I see pairs of squirrels playing chase in the trees and apartment roof-tops. Our apartment complex looks like a state park lodge with 100 apartments and many oak and pine trees and many varities of shrubs and flowers. The birds and squirrels love it. We also have mallard ducks that visit the pond on the property.

Retirement is great and we will continue to injoy each day as long a the SS checks keep coming in. Thanks to all you young taxpayers.

06-25-10

NEWS FLASH:
It's hot out there! Just in case someone is in Alaska or the South Pole or hasn't been out of the house in a month. We try to stay inside out of the 90+ weather but venture out once in a while to go to church, the grocery store or work in the food bank. I worked in the food bank Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoon. Had over 40 families come in during each of the 2.5 hour shifts. There are 2 shifts a day on Monday thru Thursday. The economy isn't getting much better around here. I'm just glad God has blessed the Park Plaza brethren with open hearts and liberal pockets.

We have really enjoyed having the grandsons over frequently to cool off in the Apartment pool. We sure miss not being able to see our other son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter but keep praying that things will improve in that area.

Doug and Nic took the Bustron robot see previous post) to a bus manufacturers meeting in Arlington, Tex. last weekend. I think Doug and the bot go to Chicago this weekend. We still get to keep Stone on Mondays and Tuesdays this summer. Guess he will be in school this fall so that will end the weekly visits.

Ryan is growing like a weed, talking and singing the alphabet. Cole is keeping busy and has won the "Biggest Lower" prize with the weight control group at church. She hooks Ryan in a trailer behind her bike and goes 6 miles or more even in this heat.

Stone is 3 yoa now and talking up a storm. sometimes sulls up when I don't let him have his way but he comes by it natural. Got brave enough to stand alone on shallow end of pool last week. Will probably swim before end of summer.

David is going back to Florida next week to work on the flight safety trainers they sold earlier this year.

Nic and Krista are getting married in August so the engaged and their mothers are buzzing around getting ready for the big event. Father of the groom doesn't have to do much so I'm just chillin' till the day.

Guess El & I will get up early and go to the farmers' market (hippy style) before it gets too hot Saturday morning. We may take a dip in the pool when we get back.

God bless you all.

Brooks & Dunn - Believe

I was driving down Yale the other day on the way to the Food Bank when I came across this song on the car radio. I had heard it before but not in quite a while. Brooks & Dunn are spliting up I hear. I think this song will be around for a long long while.

May 17, 2010

Stone here this morning. Ryan will join him this PM. They are like a pond full of otters when they get together. They lough and run and play (and fight and take things from each other) and take baths and nap and eat and hug and cry when they have to go home.
It has been raining almost every day for over a week. Today is overcast but sun is trying to break through. This morning we got to go for a walk with Stone. When ever he gets outside, he has to find a stick(s) and shoot everything. After our walk Stone and Ellen drew chalk pictures on the walk in front of our apt. Now they are going to the store to get something for Stone.
Last Thursday we didn't get to work at the Food Bank because a storm the night before knocked out the electricity at the church building. Found out Sunday that the power had come back on around noon Thursday but no one told us at the time. Got a call from Foodbank Deacon's wife asking us to work Wednesday afternoon. Guess that makes up for last week. Guess will get double pay for this LOL
Ryan came over around three and stayed until about 10 while Nichole had Bunko at her house. Stone left about 5:30. We won't see him again until Monday. Doug and Shonn are going to Branson for a much needed rest and Shonn's parents ar keeping the boys next week. Nichole picked Ryan up around 10 and the silence seems strange.
Signed up for Sam's card today. Lots of oppertunity to get things in bulk for church related activities. Free internet thingy which allows you to see and talk to other Skypers on your computer. Also can talk around the world on regular phone but I can already do that.
Another short night. Sometimes I wake up in the night and can't go back to sleep. Usually watch TV, read or do crossword puzzles. Tonight it's blogging.
I'm trying to set it up where it will show up on Facebook when I post a blog. This will be the first try. Let me know if it works.

Well, here's a belated Happy Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year "If you don't eat your blackeyed peas - yore overhauls'll have holes in the knees" JAB Sr., Valentine, St. Patrick's Day and an up-coming Easter. We Got back from a 4 day mission trip to New Orleans where we (about 70 people from our congregation) worked on the church building and education building for a congregation there. We had a blast. Sampled all the Cajun food (no oysters) and enjoyed a lot of good fellowship and worship with the New Orleans brothern. Becky, Sherrill's older daughter, is planning a family reunion in April for the Broyles' and Rows. Don't know if E. and I will be up to the long drive but we hope so. Beautiful day today. Supposed to be in the 80's
Thinking about going fishing at the Apt. pond this afternoon. Said that all last summer but never got it done.
Talking about reunions, we used to have frequent family get togethers at my paternal grandparents' home in Mesquite, Texas. All my aunts & uncles & cousins would get together for lunch and the cousins would chase each other around the yard and act silly. Mama Broyles had a green "kitchen safe" that was about 6 foot tall. She always had a pan of biscuits left over from breakfast (Grandpa wouldn't eat store-bought light bread, called it "wasp nests" so Mama Broyles would cook him a pan of scratch biscuits every morning and we kids always looked forward to getting the leftovers.
One of the last reunion the C. E. Broyles clan had was about 30 years ago at the same park in Gainsville where Becky is planning this one. Since then, our father, Clarence, brother Jimmy and his oldest son "Little Jim" have died and Sherrill is now widowed. Many additions to the extended family. At the last reunion, the highlight for me was when brother Jimmy went over and blues dulcimer with a black family that was picnicing at the same pavillion.
The most recent reunion was in August of 2004 shortly before Little Jim died. in the Arbuckle Mountains of Oklahoma. Doug was working for a man who had just built a cabin to rent out to tourists and family groups such as us. We all crammed into a 2 bedroom cabin and had a wonderful weekend together.
I will try to locate some pictures and post on the blog soon.
